Future of Independent Clinical Research in Europe
On 2 September this international conference will address the importance, but also the threats, of independent academic clinical research in Europe and will highlight problems related to the implementation of the European Directive on experimentation of medicinal products. Another objective is to discuss potential ethical problems of conducting clinical research and the barriers to conduct translational research requiring the collection and the use of human biological material and personal data. The conference will also address the need to consider appropriate funding for independent academic clinical research in Europe.

SME Innovation and Knowledge
The final conference of the Small City Project will take place on 24 September 2010 at the Committee of the Regions, Rue Belliard 99-101, room JDE51. The aim of this conference is to provide information on the aid and resources that the EU offers to SMEs in order to boost their growth, creativity and innovative capacity through knowledge and training. During the conference some of the financing guidelines that the EU offers to encourage the training of SMEs and young entrepreneurs will be presented. Moreover, initiatives to support SMEs, such as the Enterprise Europe Network and the SME’s portal, will also be put forward.

The main objective of the Researchers' night consists of bringing the researchers closer to the large public, allowing for direct exchanges, meetings and interactive activities. It gives the public, and in particular young people, the opportunity to meet researchers within the context of festive and fun activities and to highlight the appeal of pursuing a research career.

The event will examine the key role of regional policy-making in the realisation of European sustainability objectives. Infrastructures for Energy Research
In November 2010 the ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) Forum will publish an update of its European Roadmap in the field of energy research infrastructures. The two-day ENERI conference (29-30 November 2010) aims to contribute to the implementation of this Roadmap. It aims also to stimulate the development of a comprehensive strategy for the research infrastructures with all concerned actors (research, industry, public authorities), within the framework drawn up by the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). The impact of research infrastructures on the implementation of energy policies and sustainable development will be analysed as well as issues related to human capital, public-private partnership and funding aspects. The event will take place in the Square Brussels Meeting Center, Mont des Arts 22.
